Porcelain Crowns Specialist
A dental crown is used to strengthen and protect a tooth. It fits over the tooth like a cap, covering every exposed surface. In many cases, it can save a damaged tooth that would otherwise need extracting. Crowns can be made from several materials, including metal, porcelain, and resin. Dr. Michael Delmont uses only the highest quality dental materials. Therefore, he recommends porcelain, which is strong, long lasting, and exceptionally beautiful.
I can always count on his great attention to detail and demand for perfection.
It's refreshing when a professional strives to create relationships with their patients.
I've been a patient of Dr. Delmont for over 10 years and he is a fantastic dentist.
Porcelain Crowns Q&A
When a crown is needed
Crowns are one of several options for restoring broken, worn, or decayed teeth. Depending on the extent of the damage, Dr. Delmont may recommend a more conservative treatment, such as inlays, onlays, or porcelain veneers. However, if a large portion of the tooth structure is missing or damaged, these options may not be strong enough. Veneers provide esthetic restoration, but do little to protect the tooth. Inlays and onlays are sufficient in some cases, but they are not as strong as crowns.
Sometimes a crown is necessary even if the damage does not appear extensive. If you currently have any large fillings, those teeth may be weakened. Decay can occur behind a filling, and you may never see it. Usually, this happens due to sub-par dental work (which you will never see in Dr. Delmont’s patients), or lack of oral hygiene. Additionally, a crown is usually recommended following root canal therapy, because the tooth can become brittle.
The process is quite straightforward, and can be completed in just a couple of office visits. After your initial consultation, the next step is preparing your tooth. All decayed and damaged tooth structure is removed. The tooth may be reduced further or built up, as needed. Then it is carefully shaped, for maximum retention, and impressions are taken.
You will be provided with a temporary crown to wear while your permanent one is being fabricated by a quality dental laboratory. When your new porcelain crown is ready (about one or two weeks), you will return to our office. Dr. Delmont will gently remove the temporary, and check the color and fit of the porcelain crown. If it meets his standards of excellence, he will cement it in place.
The appearance, comfort, and longevity of a crown depend largely on the skill of your dentist. Even a small mistake in shaping the tooth or designing the crown can result in pain, discomfort, or premature failure of the restoration.
